Google: Starting in July, page speed will be a ranking factor for mobile searches

Today Google announced they will start using page speed as a mobile ranking factor, beginning in July. Google has been using page speed as a desktop ranking factor since 2010. For years, Google talked about wanting to use the same page speed signal for mobile search results. It wasn’t until June of 2016, that someone from Google officially confirmed that Google’s page speed factor would soon apply to mobile as well.

What to Expect from Google’s Mobile-Friendly Update

In case you missed it, Google announced back in February that they plan to release a major algorithm update on Tuesday, April 21st. According to Google, the update will expand their use of mobile friendliness as a ranking signal and will be the most significant update they’ve ever released. To put things into perspective, Google Webmaster Trends analyst Zineb Ait Bahajji was quoted at SMX Munich, saying that the upcoming update would be a bigger upset than Panda and Penguin.

Mobile-Friendly Sites Rank Higher on Google

In recent years, mobile optimization has been a pretty hot topic for SEOs, web developers and online marketers. As mobile usage increased, more and more businesses switched to responsive and adaptive designs to improve the user experience on tablet and smartphone devices. Back in June of 2013, in an effort to improve the search experience for mobile users, Google announced that they would start demoting sites that weren’t deemed mobile-friendly.
